Participant Story by Leah Campos
Peter* is in the midst a 12-week construction training program that includes a variety of useful skills such as carpentry, solar panel installation, building performance/weatherization, and electrical work. Peter’s case manager wrote a letter on behalf of Peter to help him obtain glasses so that he could successfully perform the critical hands-on component of his program.
Resource Specialist Leah answered the call! First she helped Peter find out if he has MediCal and set up an appointment for him to have his eyes examined. Peter left the office with a scheduled appointment and the PHC and vision volunteer teams worked together to figure out how Peter could get his glasses in time to continue his training. We decided to utilize our partnership with Site for Sore Eyes to see if we could accelerate the process. Site for Sore Eyes provided PHC with a discounted rate of $99 and we were able to use emergency funds to support Peter in making this purchase on his behalf.
When Peter came back into the office, he was wearing his outfit from the training. He expressed gratitude to PHC, and especially Resource Specialist Leah, and had a big smile on his face.
It felt amazing knowing that Peter received his glasses so he can stay in the training program that will enable him to move forward on his career goals!
