Meeting Someone Where They Are
Imagine you are homeless. You are tired and ache from several rough nights of little-to-no sleep. Your stomach rumbles with the deep familiar pains of hunger and thirst, you can literally feel your health deteriorating. You haven’t had a warm shower or a change of clothes in a long time. With holes in your shoes, you feel hopeless and embarrassed.
Now imagine a big red CareVan pulling up nearby. Friendly staff offer you a meal, a hot cup of coffee, and a small kit with dental care items, soap, deodorant, and shampoo to freshen up with. Together, you fill out paperwork for a free California State ID, which you need in order to register for shelter, housing, or apply for a job. You are given a clean pair of underwear and socks and sign up for your first shower in weeks from Lava Mae. Staff register you with Studio Dental for a dental cleaning, and you even get a new pair of glasses. Suddenly, things are looking a whole lot brighter.
A Day of Dignity
On May 23rd, PHC and Lave Mae hosted A Day of Dignity to celebrate the unveiling of the new PHC CareVan: a mobile services unit loaded with supplies for a pop-up service event. Together with our community and a few friends… Replate, HandUp, Studio Dental, and The Street Store, we provided showers, meals, clothing, hygiene supplies, dental care, and haircuts that brightened the day for hundreds of San Franciscans in need.
